The area now known as Reseda was originally inhabited by Native Americans of the Tongva tribe who lived close to what is now known as the Los Angeles River. Reseda originated in 1912 as the town of Marian on land that was originally part of the San Fernando Mission.  It was named after Marian Otis Chandler, the daughter of the Los Angeles Times publisher Harrison Gray Otis and wife of Harry Chandler. The name Reseda refers to the fragrant plant Reseda odorata which was commonly found in gardens of the time.

 

Today, Reseda is known as an exciting Southern California city with a very cool vibe. Close to Hollywood, Los Angeles, and major freeways, Reseda is a desirable community that draws an eclectic mix of people in the entertainment biz and young professionals. The city is the epitome of 80’s and 90’s pop culture and was the location for numerous films and the epicenter for nostalgic music venues. One of the most well known is The Reseda Country Club, that helped ignite the punk rock and new wave scenes of the 1980s.

 

Located at the intersection of Canby Avenue and Sherman Way, the Country Club was host to bands, including Oingo Boingo, U2, Culture Club, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, and Roxy Music, from 1980 to 1982. The site which began in the 1950s as one of the first Sav-On Drug stores in the San Fernando Valley, later became a night-club and remained a dance hall and music venue throughout the 1990s; it was also used as a boxing venue. Some well known movies that were filmed in Reseda are; Erin Brockovich, Magnolia, Karate Kid, Terminator 2 and recently Cobra Kai!
